KEYNOTE ADDRESS BY ENVIRONMENTALIST OF THE YEAR

Canberra, July 4: Professor Peter Cullen, named at the recent Banksia Environmental Foundation Awards as the Prime Minister's Environmentalist of the Year, will tomorrow, July 5, give the Keynote Address at the Fenner Conference on the Environment.

The conference is being held in The Shine Dome at the Academy of Science in Gordon Street, Acton.

Professor Cullen, Director of the Co-operative Research Centre for Freshwater Ecology at the University of Canberra, will deliver a speech entitled Challenges to Aquatic Conservation.

The theme of this year's Fenner conference is Biodiversity Conservation in Freshwaters: Same Landscape, Different Perspective.

This is in recognition of the fact that freshwater biodiversity is under increasing threat, and providing adequate freshwater to meet the long-term needs of human health is looming as the major global challenge of the 21st century.

The Fenner Conference on the Environment will provide a forum for fresh approaches and perspectives on biodiversity conservation in freshwaters and other inland aquatic ecosystems, both modified and unimpacted. It will also seek to encourage new policies for biodiversity conservation and management.

Professor Cullen will deliver his keynote address from 9.20am to 10am on Thursday. For further information, contact UC Associate Professor Arthur Georges on 0418 866 741, or visit the Fenner 2001 website at for a full program listing.
