New Partnership To Involve Community In Restoring ACT's Landscapes

ACT Forests, Environment ACT, ANU's National Institute for Environment, University of Canberra's Centre for Water Research (part of the CRC for Freshwater Ecology) and Greening Australia have formed a partnership to work together and with the ACT government and community to help restore the ACT's landscape in the wake of the January 2003 fires.

The partnership will help the ACT community become more involved in the recovery process through active participation in growing, replanting, monitoring and managing the landscape.

According to Greening Australia’s Toby Jones: “One of the most encouraging aspects of the new partnership is that it promises to enhance opportunities for constructive community participation in ACT landscape renewal.”

Pilot activities of the new alliance include:
* A ‘seedathon’ at Greening Australia’s community nursery on 18 January 2004 to propagate 20,000 native trees, shrubs and grasses for bushfire-affected landscapes
* Replanting in important catchment and community recreation areas at Stromlo and the Cotter, and
* Community events and activities, including World Forestry Day (21 March) and World Environment Day (5 June).

By coming together, and linking with other ACT agencies, researchers and land managers, the partners believe they will achieve much better outcomes than they could achieve separately.

ACT Forests has responsibility for restoration and management of 10,000 ha of the ACT's non-urban land.

Environment ACT is responsible for managing, protecting and conserving the natural and cultural resources of the ACT, including nature parks and reserves.

ANU's National Institute for Environment and UC’s Centre for Water Research bring knowledge, science and learning through both staff and students.

Greening Australia brings together the community and technical expertise in active, on-ground landscape restoration.
