PRESS RELEASE

Rotary Murray-Darling School of Freshwater Research
Albury

FOR IMMEDIATE USE Wednesday 12 April, 2000

The fifth Rotary Murray-Darling School of Freshwater Research will be held in Albury environs from Sunday 16 to Thursday 20 April 2000. The School is structured to enable the best students in the region to work with the scientists of the Murray-Darling Freshwater Research Centre (MDFRC) and the Cooperative Research Centre for Freshwater Ecology, so that they may better understand and appreciate the issues relevant to freshwater ecology. The MDFRC is the premier freshwater research institute in Australia, which carries out medium to long-term research aimed at providing a scientific foundation upon which management of the Murray-Darling Basin, as a sustainable water resource, can be managed.

The participants this year include 26 students from as far away as Berri, Cobar, Nambucca Heads and Mudgee; local Waterwatch coordinators from the area; and Graduate Diploma of Education students from La Trobe University (Wodonga). These University students and some of the younger scientists from MDFRC will act as “mentors” for the participating students, helping them in their endeavours during the week. Dr Nick Klomp from Charles Sturt University will speak to the students during an evening session.

The participants are presented with a problem at the start of the School, and work in groups for the week to solve the problem. To assist in their research, they are “lectured, demonstrated, field tripped, advised and assisted” by the staff. Participants will work in the laboratories at the MDFRC at Thurgoona and at field sites in the Albury-Wodonga area. A highlight of the Rotary Murray-Darling School of Freshwater Research, is the presentation of each group’s report to a meeting of scientists and Rotarians at the conclusion of the School.

It is intended that the participants will complete the School with a greatly hightened understanding about the role of scientists, their methods and the place of their research in our society.
