International panel recommends extending water research centre

An international team of eminent ecologists has recommended the extension of the Cooperative Research Centre (CRC) for Freshwater Ecology for a further seven years.

The CRC for Freshwater Ecology has received a glowing report from the international review panel charged with assessing the Centre's progress and scientific excellence over the last five years.

The CRC for Freshwater Ecology is a collaborative venture between 16 research, government and industry organisations whose aim is to improve the condition of Australia's inland waters. It is one of 67 Cooperative Research Centres in Australia which have been established over the last eight years with the aim of capturing the benefits of research by bringing research and industry groups closer together. Each CRC is established for seven years and must go through a rigorous review process at both its third and fifth year mark.

The first stage of the 5th Year Review, which the CRC for Freshwater Ecology has just completed, focuses on the Centre's research program while the second stage examines the Centre's relevance to industry and its success in getting industry to adopt its research findings.

Acting Director for the CRC for Freshwater Ecology (CRCFE), Prof Barry Hart, said that he was thrilled with the review panel's report.

"The panel stated that it believed the CRCFE was making a major contribution to improving the condition of Australia's inland waters," Prof Hart said.

"The panel was particularly impressed with the innovative approaches to research being developed by the CRCFE. They commented that the integrated, multidisciplinary and team approach was most likely to produce the new knowledge required by the Australian water industry."

The first stage of the CRCFE's 5th Year Review was conducted at the Murray-Darling Freshwater Research Centre in Albury over two days last week. The panel included internationally-respected aquatic ecologist, and former Australia Prize recipient, Prof Gene Likens from the Institute of Ecosystem Studies in New York; Prof Colin Townsend, another eminent aquatic ecologist from the University of Otago, New Zealand; and Mrs Christine Forster, a Victorian farmer, member of the Victorian Catchment Management Council and Land and Water Resources Research & Development Corporation.
