New Director appointed to Murray-Darling Freshwater Research Centre.

It was announced today that Dr Ben Gawne has been appointed Director of the Murray-Darling Freshwater Research Centre.

As Director, Dr Gawne will lead the Centre’s three regional laboratories located in Albury, Mildura and Goondiwindi. Dr Gawne also takes a position on the Executive of the Cooperative Research Centre for Freshwater Ecology, of which Murray-Darling Freshwater Research Centre is an integral part.

In announcing Dr Gawne’s appointment, Professor Peter Cullen, Chief Executive of the CRC for Freshwater Ecology, said that he was excited to have Ben take on this challenging and exciting leadership position and that he was confident that Dr Gawne would build on the excellent reputation already established by the Centre over the last 25 years.

Ben comes to the position with an extensive knowledge of the Basin’s rivers and how they are managed. As Scientist-in-charge of the Centre’s Lower Basin Laboratory, located at Mildura Ben has spent the last five years working with government agencies and the local community providing the knowledge they require to manage their rivers.

Understanding the ecology of the Murray has been a major focus of Ben’s research. As leader of a team of 15 scientists, Ben has determined how the Murray functions under different flows and at different times of the year. This groundbreaking research shows how different flows change the rivers productivity. This knowledge will be crucial in guiding environmental flows for the Murray and other rivers.

Dr Gawne sees an exciting future for the Centre, “As the demands we place on the Basin’s rivers continue to increase, the Centre is well placed to provide the ecological knowledge on which to base innovative water resource management.

I will endeavour to work with the Basin community to develop management strategies using the best possible science to ensure the sustainable use of our precious water resources”.
