Lower Basin Laboratory to stay in Mildura

Professor Peter Cullen, Chief Executive of the CRC for Freshwater Ecology announced today that the Lower Basin Laboratory of the CRC is to remain in Mildura and be located in a new building to be built for LaTrobe University. The Victorian Minister for State and Regional Development, John Brumby, announced the $2.5 million Regional Infrastructure Development Grant to LaTrobe for the new building.

Professor Cullen thanked regional communities in the three States for their ongoing support for the laboratory. “We have had strong support from each of the three States, with NSW and South Australia also offering to provide a building.”

The strong and ongoing support from the Mildura community was a critical factor in the decision to remain in Mildura. The involvement of Sunraysia Rural Water and of Lower Murray Water, as well as a major community contribution to the cost of the building has been fundamental in the decision.

The Laboratory is looking forward to new purpose built accommodation within a University facility which will provide a range of other supports. The CRC is looking forward to the opportunity to expand its work to help our understanding of how the Murray-Darling systems function, and to provide this knowledge to agencies and community groups involved with planning and managing these important catchments in the three States. The CRC will be providing an additional scientific staff member to add to the team already working out of Mildura. The laboratory expects to increase its working in the area of how salinity is impacting wetlands of the region, and on aspects of environmental flows in the Murray river.
