Professor Gary Jones Appointed as New Leader of the Freshwater CRC

Professor Gary Jones has been appointed as the new Chief Executive of the CRC of Freshwater Ecology at the University of Canberra, following the retirement of Professor Peter Cullen on 30 June.

Professor Jones said “Freshwater ecology, the science of understanding how rivers work, is now accepted as a key part of the knowledge needed to manage water in this country. However, managing water more sustainably in Australia still presents enormous challenges and the CRC will continue to provide reliable, independent scientific advice to inform the management decisions that have to be made.”

Professor Jones continued, “Over the next three years, the CRC will generate new knowledge needed to underpin the management of biodiversity conservation, environmental flows, rehabilitation of urban and rural streams, the impacts of salinity on the ecology of our rivers and ecological assessment.”

Professor Jones has a distinguished career in science research and communication and is committed to developing and applying ecological knowledge to river and catchment management. In his capacity as Chair of the River Murray Expert Reference Panel on Environmental Flows & Water Quality, Professor Jones recently provided key advice on environmental flows to the Murray-Darling Basin Ministerial Council.

Professor Jones is an international authority on Blue-green algae (cyanobacteria). He has provided advice on the management of toxic algal problems in Australia and overseas and has worked closely with the World Health Organisation on the development of international best management principles for toxic cyanobacteria in drinking and recreational waters. Before joining the CRC as Director of Knowledge Exchange, he led a CSIRO team studying the ecology, water quality and management of Australia’s lakes and rivers.

Professor Jones, while paying tribute to Professor Cullen’s achievements, said “Professor Cullen’s contribution to improving the health of Australian rivers has been exceptional. As Chief Executive of the CRC for Freshwater Ecology, Peter has been an influential adviser to federal and state governments and a driving force for water reform.”
