International fish biologist visiting Lower Basin Laboratory, Mildura, for three months

The Murray Darling Freshwater Research Centre (MDFRC) is currently playing host to an international fish biologist. Dr Lorenzo Vilizzi, a freshwater ecologist from Italy, will be using his expertise to assist on a number of fish projects in the Mildura laboratory over the next three months.

Dr Vilizzi is already familiar with many of the issues facing the fish of the River Murray. He conducted his PhD on the “Age, growth and early life history of carp” at the University of Adelaide from 1993 to 1997.

Dr Vilizzi has a broad range of skills including the aging of fish using structures such as scales and otoliths (ear bones), aspects of fish behaviour and conservation of fish. As well as PhD work in Australia and his current work in Italy, Dr Vilizzi has worked in England for two years on a European commission project (through the European Union) on the conservation of the native fish Barbel in the River Lee.

Officer in charge at the MDFRC laboratory, Dr Shaun Meredith, said “Dr Vilizzi is a very experienced fish ecologist with some highly specialized skills in experimental design, computer modeling and statistical analysis. He will be applying these skills and assisting us on a number of the projects currently underway at the MDFRC, including the work on the recruitment of native larval fish at Lindsay Island”.

Dr Vilizzi said “I am very glad to be here in Mildura. I hope to be able to make a genuine contribution to the laboratory’s research and help progress our understanding of Australian native fish and the river system”.
