Scope of the Sustainable Rivers Audit

The CRC for Freshwater Ecology was recently asked to develop a framework for the proposed Sustainable Rivers Audit (SRA) for the Murray-Darling Basin's waterways. The SRA follows from a recommendation made in the Review of the Operation of the Cap, to which the CRC for Freshwater Ecology contributed the report "Ecological Sustainability of Rivers of the Murray Darling Basin".

The Sustainable Rivers Audit was proposed to provide a comparable means of reporting river health across the Murray-Darling Basin that could be used as the basis for an informed discussion of river health. It is the view of the CRC for Freshwater Ecology that such an audit is feasible and would fill a major feedback gap in the existing management of the Basin. With water becoming an increasingly scarce and valuable resource, people seek assurance that water allocated to the environment is delivering real environmental benefits. The SRA can be designed as a comprehensive annual review of the condition of waterways to inform debate amongst the Basin community.

Drafted in late June by Cullen, Harris, Hillman, Liston, Norris and Whittington the report "Scope of the Sustainable Rivers Audit" details a framework for the proposed SRA.
