“Hydrology is about following the journey of water,” says Dr. Someth. “To imagine where each drop goes when it rains – does it soak into the soil, flow into a creek, fill a reservoir, or make its way to the ocean?”
For Dr. Someth, Head of Hydrology at eWater Group, this question is more than a scientific puzzle. It is the foundation of a career dedicated to understanding how water shapes landscapes, sustains communities, and influences the future of entire regions.
A Career Shaped by Water
Dr. Someth did not come to hydrology by default. Instead, he was drawn to water as a thread connecting people, ecosystems, and economies. Early in his career, he worked on irrigation and hydropower projects, hydrological plot to basin scale modelling, Decision Support System and complex transboundary water management in the Mekong River Basin. These experiences revealed both the beauty and fragility of water systems and sparked a commitment to use science as a bridge between human needs and natural systems.
His path eventually crossed with eWater through collaborative work in the Mekong. There, he saw how eWater Source and the organisation’s expertise could transform complex hydrological science into practical decision-making tools. Joining eWater was a natural progression, an opportunity to combine technical mastery with leadership in shaping water management.
Science in Service of Society
“What excites me most about hydrology is that it’s both science and service,” he explains. “It’s not just numbers in a model, it’s about protecting livelihoods, securing drinking water, sustaining agriculture, optimising hydropower and safeguarding ecosystems.”
One defining experience was leading transboundary river monitoring and modelling in the whole Mekong River Basin, where balancing upstream and downstream development and conservation across multiple countries showed the power of science to foster cooperation.
Today, as Head of Hydrology, he leads a team that develops and applies modelling tools for governments, water authorities, and communities in Australia and globally. These tools allow decision-makers to test “what if” scenarios, giving them an evidence-based way to see the future before committing to high-stakes choices.
Looking Ahead
The pressures on water systems are mounting, from shifting rainfall and climate extremes to rapid population growth. Having spent recent time learning Australia’s unique water management challenges as the world’s driest inhabited continent, Dr. Someth is enjoying the opportunity to expand his knowledge and support the management of Australia’s scarce water resources. He believes the future of hydrology lies in integration: linking models with real-time monitoring, harnessing artificial intelligence, and making tools more accessible through cloud-based workflows and advanced data visualisation.
At eWater, he and his team are preparing for this future by investing in interoperable tools, capacity building, and partnerships that span disciplines and geographies.
Inspiring the Next Generation
Beyond his technical leadership, Dr. Someth is passionate about inspiring new voices in hydrology. “Hydrology needs new skills and perspectives, especially from young people who bring digital expertise and a deep sense of environmental responsibility,” he says.
His advice to aspiring hydrologists is simple but powerful: “Be curious, be collaborative, and never lose sight of the human side of water.”
Grounded in Water
Despite his global career, Dr. Someth stays grounded through simple connections with water. Whether walking along rivers, photographing landscapes and livelihoods, or listening to the sound of rain, he is reminded of why this work matters.
“The most rewarding part of leading eWater’s Hydrology Team,” he reflects, “is seeing our work come full circle, from technical development to tangible benefits in a community, a river system, or a government policy.”
For Dr. Someth, every drop of water holds a story. And by following those stories, he continues to shape not only the science of hydrology, but the lives and futures it touches.
