Exploring Water Sensitive Urban Design in Action: eWater Joins Stormwater Victoria Technical Tour

June 10, 2025 | Featured News

Water Sensitive Urban Design (WSUD) is essential to shaping sustainable, liveable communities and addressing the complex challenges of urban growth, water security, and climate resilience.

As a leader in integrated water management, eWater Group was pleased to participate in the Stormwater Victoria Technical Tour, part of the lead-up to the 2025 Stormwater Victoria Conference.

eWater’s Partnerships Lead Trudy Green and Senior Urban Hydrologist Dr Mukta Sapkota joined water professionals from across the state on a field tour hosted by Water Technology and the Rural City of Wangaratta, exploring a range of WSUD sites across the region.

A Closer Look at Regional and Urban WSUD

The tour offered a rare opportunity to see the implementation and performance of WSUD initiatives in both natural and built environments.

A highlight for the eWater team was the visit to Warby-Ovens National Park, nestled between the Victorian Alps and the Murray Valley. This well-preserved floodplain ecosystem showcases the complexity of natural hydrology – and the importance of modelling tools in preserving these systems. Observing diverse landforms and thriving wetland habitats firsthand underscored how hydrological science, and engineering must work in harmony with nature.

The tour then shifted to urban environments, where discussions focused on how local governments like the Rural City of Wangaratta are managing increased demand for housing while integrating WSUD in a cost-effective, resilient way. These conversations highlighted the balancing act between urban development and environmental protection – and the growing role of data, modelling and collaboration in navigating that balance.

Collaboration at the Core

One of the most valuable aspects of the tour was the open exchange of insights between local councils, engineers, planners, and researchers.

For the eWater team, it was an opportunity to both share and listen – contributing to group discussions, offering advice, and brainstorming creative solutions with other participants.

Looking Ahead

eWater Group is proud to support the development and adoption of WSUD across Australia through our software, training, and partnerships.

We extend our thanks to Stormwater Victoria, Water Technology, and the Rural City of Wangaratta for hosting a valuable and inspiring event.
